Pickpockets (Works)

Pickpockets is a multi-channel video installation based on an album of photographs of pickpockets that Fiona Tan came across during a studio residency at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. The pickpockets, men and women from all over Europe, had been arrested at the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) in Paris. Tan was fascinated by these portraits and the unknown life stories of their subjects. Pickpockets confronts the viewer with an archival image and a fiction, a look into the past and a contemporary response. The result is an engaging dialogue between history and our attempts to understand it through the prism of art and the imagination.
